5 PS3 Sequels Sony shouldn’t announce at E3 2011

We all know Sony’s first party studios are churning out one exclusive after another, but somewhere down the line, you have to realize that some of the games suffer due to that; either that, or we get sequel to games that didn’t need a sequel. They are plenty of games that don’t get the green light, but mediocre games in its place do. For example, we needed a Syphon Filter this gen but we got a Socom 4 instead. We present you five games that we hope won’t get announced at this year’s E3 event.

Heavenly Sword 2

The first game had a poetic ending and making a sequel out of that is just going to make the franchise irrelevant. Not to mention the original developer is running some other franchises as we speak. Do we really need to revive Nariko and kill her again? We don’t, how about an innovative new IP Sony, that builds on the combat mechanics that Heavenly Sword had but has a fresh story, that grows on you.

We hope Sony won’t get themselves into a sticky situation by announcing a sequel to this Ninja Theory PS3 exclusive at E3 this year.

Motorstorm 4

Motorstorm: Apocalypse was a great game, you can check our review here, but people have lost interest in this. Evolution studios are great, but it’s time for them to work on a new racing IP, that pushes the bar for arcade racing. Motorstorm franchise was amazing but it lacked that spark that made people buy the game in droves. The sales speak for themselves and no bundle sales doesn’t count. There can be a ton of innovative ways to create a new arcade racer, Motorstorm although provided a great racing experience, cannot be compared to the likes of Burnout Paradise that provided you a lot of content and more freedom.

Socom 5

It’s’ time to stop making Socom games. The ones on the PS2 were a work of art while both the Socom games on the PS3, Socom Confrontation and Socom 4, disappointed a lot and alienated their fanbase. It would be nice if Zipper can sit out this gen and make MAG 2 for the PS4. They are truly the weakest link in Sony’s studios and haven’t made a good game this gen. While we loved their Socom games on the PS2, they just don’t have it in them to replicate and continue that trend for the Playstation 3.

Lair 2

We absolutely don’t need this game. While it had some good ideas, the controls were atrocious. The game had a six axis sensing system which didn’t work all that well and was added as a minus in almost every review. They can fix the controls for Lair 2. But what about the story and gameplay which was very bad? They can’t deviate too much from that. The game was a complete waste of money for Sony, an exclusive they should have never got. We don’t want Sony to invest in a sequel for that because it just doesnt have any fans and won’t sell that much. Single player only, will reduce its chances to be a commercial hit, so Sony needs to pick their investments well and Lair 2 is absolutely not one of them. We hope E3 is free of such a disastrous announcement.

Yakuza 6

The Yakuza series has become an ever-present IP for the PlayStation 3. The title always seems to manage to sell well in Japan, seeing as the game is primarily a Japanese-based title. However, publisher SEGA had been impressed with the game’s reception enough to actually bring the game over to the west. Yakuza 4 released in western territories back in March, 2011 and during the time the game was being released SEGA announced, yes – you guessed it, Yakuza 5. While Yakuza’s premise is very much interesting to many gamers – who wouldn’t want to go around killing the mafia in an open-world environment  - SEGA are undoubtedly starting to milk the series way too fast. If the game performed exceptionally well in North America as well as Europe and then for the studio to announce a new game is perfectly understandable; but to keep announcing title after title in the Yakuza series has made many gamers become skeptic on the PlayStation franchise. And, let’s not forget, all Yakuza games come out in Japan at least a good few months before the western release, which is sure not to please potential players.

Yakuza 6 isn’t a title which will excite many gamers at E3 and Sony should know that very well.
