Hey, Leger! Can you see the fire from there?!

In today’s age of high definition and technological marvels, where every game seems to be pushing beyond the benchmarks set by others in sections of game development such as graphics and gore, Mother 3 on the exterior might seem like a laughable attempt at gamemaking. It consists of graphics which looks right out of the 16 bit era although with more colors thrown in and characters which could boast nothing more than a few polygons. However, Mother 3 is made by a certain Itoi San, who is also the creator of the cult Nintendo classic Earthbound. If you can brave your initial inhibihitions of playing this game then dear gamer, there’s no escaping the world or the expeirence Mother 3 offers you with. Reknowned for his writing, Itoi has woven Mother 3′s story in such a delicate manner that its nothing less than extraordinary.

Mother 3 will touch your heart in a way which no other game ever can thanks to its touching story based around a boy and his family and their trials and turbulations(that’s putting in mildy!). In today’s world where many a developer seems to have forgotten how they can spell the word ” gameplay”, Mother 3 will grab you by the throat and command your attention throughout the course of the game due to its amazingly polished gameplay. It goes on to show how brillianty implemented gameplay is the chief component which is required for making a memoriable game.

Although Mother 3 had its official release only in Japan and left gamers in the west and rest of the world feeling heart-broken, thanks to the efforts of a highly motivated team at Starnet, an english version of the game is finally available for the world to enjoy and we would go as far as saying that if you still don’t play this game, your stint with gaming would be incomplete when you look back someday. Mother 3 is not just a videogame, its a complete experience in itself offering you with various emotions and the when your through with the game, the memories of it will last you a lifetime. Mother 3 deserves not only a mention in our list but it claims a place in one of the top 3 spots of our list of games.

2.Half Life 2

“The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world. So wake up, Mister Freeman…wake up and…smell the ashes.”

‘Shooters’ is arguably the most popular genre in gaming for the last decade or so. They are easy to pick up and play, and usually feature exciting and explosive gameplay. And the advancement of online gaming over the last few years has taken their appeal to astronomical levels among gamers.

But like Spiderman says, with great power comes great responsibility; and shooters are often guilty of completely relinquishing the responsibility of telling a coherent tale, let alone an intriguing one. How many shooters use a paper-thin plot as an excuse to just give the player an opportunity to shoot things? It’s a rhetorical question, in case you are waiting for an answer.

The Half Life series came into the picture to challenge what we had come to expect from shooters. It replaced the steroid pumped stereotypical shooter protagonist with a scientist called Gordon Freeman, a character who has gone on to become a gaming legend despite not speaking a single word ever.

But the greatness of Half Life 2 lies in its single-minded unrelenting focus on one thing and one thing only: Survival. The first game was about the survival of Gordon Freeman, and just when we thought things couldn’t get better, Half Life 2 took it to the next level with the survival of mankind.

But Valve wasn’t interested in doing anything which would come remotely close to being called generic. The mystery of the universe of Half Life is among the more intriguing ones in gaming, which still fuels much discussion about the series. And how the game managed to mix different gameplay experience expertly without ever making them feel forced upon is nothing short of exemplary. One moment you are escaping from a dystopian city under alien control, the next you are inching your way across an abandoned town where every corner is home to a new horror, and in the next you are leading a revolution to free mankind.

Every portion of this game has been crafted by Valve with extreme care, wrapped in an epic tale which ranks highly among the best in the industry. The result: An unparalleled experience which can only be matched by sequels in the series.
