ANIME FILMS/FILMS/INDEPENDENT ANIMATION

9th SEPTEMBER, 2011

  1. 11:30 AM: Special Screening of Anime film
  2. 02:00 PM: Gakusei CG Collection of Awarding Winning Anime shorts(44min)
  • Gakusei CG is the collection of awarding winning Anime shorts from across Japan covering all range of topics and stylistics devices.
  1. 3:00PM: Nitaboh Akio Nishizawa/90 min
  • At a young age, Nitaroh is stricken with an illness that leaves him blind. He inherits the shamisen guitar once used by his mother and is taught its basics by a blind travelling shamisen player. In time with the help of friends old and new, he walks the paths that leads to his ultimate fate – that of founder of the Tsugaru style of shamisen play.
  1. 04:30 PM: Barefoot Gen BY Mori Masaki/ 83 Min/
  • A powerful statement against war, Barefoot Gen is a story about the effect of the atomic bomb on a boy’s life and the lives of the Japanese people.
  1. 06:30 PM: Mind Game by Masaaki Yuasa/103 Min/
  • The film follows Nishi, a loser who has a crush on his childhood girlfriend. After an encounter with the Japanese mafia, the film follows Nishi as he journeys to heaven and back, and ends up trapped in an even more unlikely place. Nishi (and some friends) attempt to break out of their trap, and discover what it truly means to be alive along the way. This is a mind-bending trip that uses some of the most innovative animation ever created

  1. 11:30 AM: Miyori In The Sacred Forest by Yamamoto Nizo/ 116 Min
  • Based on a manga by Oda Hideji, this is one of a number of recent anime films to touch on issues of environmental destruction in Japan, along with Princess Mononoke. Through the story of a girl and a fairy tale magical friends a journey.
  1. 01:30 PM: Calf Short Films Calf( 119 min) – Age – 15+
  • A series of Short films on Japan and other stories by celeberated Japanese filmmakers featuring a collection of some of the most important contemporary Japanese anme filmmakers in the world. Calf Co-founder would be present to discuss and participate in the film.
  1. 03:30 PM: Time Traveller- Live action film screening by Masaki Taniguchi/122 Min.
  • A teenage girl Akari (Naka Riisa) finds that she has the ability to leap through time. With her newfound power, she tries to use it to find her mother Kazko’s first love, but soon realizes that tampering with time could lead to some rather discomforting results. Directed by Masaaki Taniguchi
  1. 05:30 PM: Midori Ko by Keita Kurosaka/ 55 Min
  • A woman strives to engineer a dream-food that can put a stop to the famine that has lain waste to a dystopian, near future Tokyo. A work that took over two years in making and critically acclaimed across the world. Midori-Ko is a masterpiece unlike anything in cinema.
  1. 06:30 PM: Boys On The Run by Daisuke Miura /114 Min – Age – 17 +
  • The film is based on a manga by Kengo Hanazawa which was originally serialized in Shogakukan’s Big Comic Spirits from 2005-2008, and although the adaptation is fairly loyal visually, the overall tone has been changed both in how the characters behave and how the story arc is presented

  1. 11:00 AM: Little Norse Prince Valiant by Isao Takahata/ 82Min
  • Horus, a kid living in a unnamed Scandinavian/Eastern Europe culture of the Iron Age, recovers the Sword of the Sun from the rock giant Moog and learns from his dying father that he must returns to his ancestral territory. In the process, he defends a village from the attacks of Grundewald, a warlord/ice demon and befriends the enigmatic Hilda, a lonely and beautiful girl who sings haunting songs (and who hides a terrible secret)
  1. 01:00 PM: The Glass Rabbit by Setsuko Shibuichi/ /84 Min
  • The animation ‘Glass Rabbit’ is based on the best-selling novel by Takagi Toshiko that was originally released in 1977. The Glass Rabbit portrays the horrors of life and death during the air raids on Tokyo during World War II. It wishes to express to current generations the effects and fears of war so that people will struggle for peace. One of the rare example of a beautiful, simple film for all ages in world view.
  1. 02:30 PM: Captain Harlock In Arcadia by Tomoharu Katsumata/ 130 Min
  • The Earth has been conquered by the evil Illumidus Empire with parallels drawn to the post World War Two occupation of Japan. Captain Harlock with a group that will become his life long friends begin their fight against this tyranny visited upon the planet earth with no regard to the costs the struggle will have on them, caring only for the ideal of restoring freedom to the people of earth.
  1. 4:50 PM: Galaxy Express 999 by RinTaro / 128 Min
  • The Galaxy Express 999, a mock steam engine which takes its passengers to the Andromeda Galaxy where they can obtain a mechanical body and live forever.
  1. 07:00 PM: The Dagger Of Kamui by Kamuino Ken/ 132 Min
  • An orphan named Taro killed who Tein-Hei told her was the killer of his family. Taro found out, years later that Tein-Hei is the true killer and the man he killed was his father. Taro’s revenge attempts start off a trail of assassinations and ninja swords fights spanning from Hokaido, Alaska to California where Tien-Hei’s secrets gradually unfold. The revenge road leads to a climactic battle with Tien-Hei on the fall of Japan’s Shogun-era.

  • This panel discussion will explore the opportunities and challenges in Animation Business along with education prospects for an Animation film  maker or a graphic novel writer.
  1. 01:30 PM: Pikuseru by Kshitiz Anand
  • From Sony to Honda to Zen Gardens to classic Teapot Designs. Japanese Design and the influence of Japanese art in Design has been instrumental in shaping the design industry. It’s presence is felt in the things we use, and the spaces we live in. The Pikuseru workshop aims to throw light on the key Japanese Design philosophies and its influence it had across the world. The aim of the workshop is also to initiate discussions for a framework to adopt by understanding points of similarities and dissimilarities, in the way we design things and how culture influences it. The content of this interactive workshop will be showcased with audio-visual case studies.
  1. 04:00 PM: This is not Anime but Animation by Nabuoki Doi
  • An introduction to the world of Japanese animation by Nobuaki Doi, a research associate in Waseda University. He is an editor of the site called Animations Creators and Critics and one of the co-founders of CALF, an independent DVD label of the works from Japanese independent animators.

  • The unique first one of its kind Cosplay competition, Strut your stuff and celebrate Manga, Anime, Gaming, and more by dressing up as your favorite character.
  1. 03:00 PM: Otaku Alley powered by TokioGa
  • A platform for all the anime geeks, mecha fans and Manga enthusiasts, where they discuss and explore various aspects in the world of Anime and Manga.
  1. 05:30 PM: Making of Calf, A Master Class by Nabouki Doi
  • A brief insight and analysis of the world of Anime and what it holds for us in the future with examples from independent Anime directors.

Children Special Day

  • Gaming Picture Quiz – We’ll have pictures of various popular gaming characters like Mario – Luigi – Donkey Kong- Link – Sonic – Contra – Bowser, etc and will hold a interactive quiz session, the people who can successfully identify the most gaming characters will win prizes.
  • Retro Gaming Corner – We’ll setup NES gaming consoles and have free play session of Mario, Sonic, Donkey Kong, Contra, etc for the children.
  • Did you know? – We’ll distribute a pamphlet of the children containing interesting facts about popular Japanese gaming characters and their origins and their creators. It would be written in a fun way but at the same time will be informative.
  • Gaming Competition – A gaming competition will be held on a popular racing or fighting game with one round each and the winner of the finals will get a prize. This would be done on PS3 or Xbox 360.
  • Essay Writing Competition – We’ll hold an Essay writing competition. The topic will be announced on the opening day of the Convention. The winner will win prizes.

Teenage Mayhem

  • Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Gaming Tournament – A massive scale gaming tourney will be held with free entry and limited number of slots. A separate post will be posted soon having information about this tournament. Prizes worth over Rs 10000 are up for grabs.
  • Gaming Quiz – Are you gamer enough? A question paper involving some of the latest gaming titles from Japan and other parts of the world will be prepared and participants will have to answer them. The winner will win exciting prizes.
  • Gaming Corner – We’ll setup NES and PS3/Xbox 360 gaming consoles and have free play sessions for the teenagers.
  • Upcoming Releases of 2011 – This will be a pamphlet informing them about the various upcoming titles scheduled to be released this year and their price, Japanese published and developed titles will be mentioned specifically. I’ll get in touch with E-Xpress and Milestone to see if they’re interested in sponsoring this.
