Blizzard: Pushing the envelope with SC2 DOTA mod

The DOTA-style StarCraft 2 mod Blizzard showcased at BlizzCon last year has undergone some major changes. In speaking with Eurogamer, Blizzard game designers stated that the what the players had been shown a year ago just wasn’t where they felt it could be. They felt as though they had a lot of ideas and could push the genre further, something that Blizzard is expert at.
Defense of the Ancients (DOTA) needs no introduction, and has not only inspired games such as League of Legends, Heroes of Newerth, Demigod, and now Valve’s recent Dota 2 (playable at Gamescom this past week), but it has effectively created a brand new genre in one fell swoop
With Dota 2 presently in beta, and the monumental success of free-to-play League of Legends, Blizzard has gone back to the drawing board in an effort to make the mod a viable competitor in the arena-based gaming market.
But will Blizzard be able to accomplish their goals with just a mod? And is Blizzard up to the task of creating a new game like this? Fans will have to stay tuned to see what Blizzard has in store for them at BlizzCon later this year.
