DS Lite price slashed to $99 in the US

Nintendo has trimmed down the price tag of the DS Lite, which will retail for an MRP of $99.99 from June 5th. That’s not all. Apparently, Nintendo feels that there are too many Italian plumbers in the gaming industry, leading many people to overlook their mascot. Hence, all Mario games on the DS will be relaunched with red bordered packaging for easier identification.

The Mario titles which will be receiving a makeover, along with their worldwide sales are as follows:

  • New Super Mario Bros.: more than 9.25 million units
  • Mario Kart DS: more than 7.40 million units
  • Super Mario 64 DS: more than 4.34 million units
  • Mario Party DS: more than 3.27 million units
  • Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story: more than 1.98 million units
  • Mario vs. Donkey Kong: Mini-Land Mayhem!: more than 1.01 million units

The DS has shipped 48.9 million units in the US alone, and around 147.4 million worldwide. A milestone which even the original GameBoy couldn’t accomplish with its 10 year life cycle.

“From the moment it launched, Nintendo DS Lite hit a sweet spot for consumers in terms of value, experience and fun,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo America. “This new price point will introduce Nintendo DS Lite to even more consumers, and the new red packaging will make it easy for them to find their favorite Mario titles.”

If for god knows what reason, you’ve yet to pick up a DS, then there’s never been a better time to do so. However, prices of the DSi and DSi XL will remain as it is
