LG seeks a ban on the PS3 in the US
According to Eurogamer, Korean giant LG wants Sony’s PlayStation 3 and Bravia televisions banned in the US for what it claims are patent infringements relating to Blu-ray playback.
LG claims Sony is encroaching on four of its patents in a complaint that broadly relates to “certain electronic devices having a Blu-Ray Disc player and components thereof”.
Certain documents have been revealed, which has been seemingly filed with the US International Trade Commission in Washington relating to the complaint. Although, a particular PlayStation 3 Model (CECH-2501A) is the only Sony product to be specifically named in the main document of the complaint. It should be noted though that the ITC has the power to block imports of products that violate US patents.
Other reports suggest that LG’s claims are revenge for cases brought against it by Sony last December. Sony had claimed previously that the Seoul-based company is overstepping seven of its patents relating to LG phones, and had even filed a civil lawsuit against LG Blu-ray players.
With world’s second (Sony) and third (LG) largest TV makers arguing over Blu-Ray infrigement, it remains to be seen how this complaint by LG turns out. For us, it’s plainly absurd, and lets pray to the havens that things dont go LG’s way.
