Mafia II Review – A Tale of Friendship and Betrayal

Closing Comments

Mafia 2 is an amazing game with a quality story. But all is not rosy when you compare it to the first one, infact it’s a bit dissapointing that the core mechanics are not similar maybe even downgraded. The City feels sterile and there is a lack of replayability factor and basically not much to do in the city. But this lack of replayability is offset by the PC version to an extent, which is available for much cheaper and is defacto the superior version when it comes to the visual fidelity on offer.

The beautifully detailed Empire City,  along with fun gameplay mechanics makes this game a must have, especially if you have played and loved its predecessor. What are you waiting for, just go and buy it to experience one of the greatest stories ever told.

( PS3 version )

We also got a chance to review the game on the PS3 aswell. The PS3 version is undoubtedly the “worst” of the lot when it comes to the visuals, however that’s quickly forgiven since the controls feel a lot tighter in the PS3 version and you won’t ever have a problem while driving cars. The PS3 version also has exclusive content which is rather fun to play and remind you more of the “Mafia” of the past. I had a blast playing through arcade styled fast-paced missions and that DLC pack does add a lot of value and perhaps makes this version, the one to pick up for console owners.

Another thing, which is different in the PS3 version is that, it has a bit longer load times between levels but since there’s no manual install and the game just takes up about 50 megs of your hard drive , that can be overlooked aswell. Apart from looking a bit inferior compared to its other counterparts, the PS3 version of the game pretty much holds up on its own and offers almost an identical playing experience when compared to the other two versions of the game.

I really had a blast playing through the game and the extra content made the deal, all the more sweeter on the PS3. That, backed by some solid framerates and great handling, made this one of my best playing experiences on the PS3 this year. Anyone looking to get the most out of Mafia II, should go for the PS3 version but if you’re someone who likes shiny visuals the most, then this one’s not for you.
