Nintendo drops the price of the Wii to $149.99/£129, Nintendo Selects range revealed

After much rumors, Nintendo has finally decided to slash the price of the Wii to $149.99. While in Europe, the new price tag will be £129, down by a whopping £50. The price drop will come in to effect from May 15th onwards.

However, the new wave of Wii models will replace the bundled Wii Sports and Wii Sports resorts with a copy of Super Mario Kart and a steering wheel.

Nintendo also plans to re-release select Wii games as budget titles under the “Nintendo Selects” labels. The first line up of games to be joining this range are The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Animal Crossing: City Folk, Mario Super Sluggers and Wii Sports. The games will retail for $20. Europe residents will be treated to a different line up which includes Wii Sports, WarioWare: Smooth Moves, Mario Strikers Charged Football and Animal Crossing: Let’s Go to the City. Prices will start from £19.

“From the day it launched, Wii has let players of all ages and experience levels have fun with one another,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, head of Nintendo of America.

“The new suggested retail pricing for both the hardware and select games will help create more of these magical moments for even greater numbers of people.”

The new price cut is fueled by the imminent announcement of the console’s successor which is due to be unveiled at this years E3. So if you haven’t picked up a Wii yet, we can’t think of a better time to do so then now.
