Portal 2 co-op on PS3 requires users to make Steam account

Before gamers can enjoy the co-op mode in the PS3 version of Portal 2, they would require to make a registered Steam Account. Valve’s Chet Faliszek has stated that the co-op component of Portal 2 wouldn’t simply run through PSN, and that a Steam account would be required.

“You need to have a Steam account if you want to play co-op because we’re doing some things between the PC and PS3 versions,” said Faliszek.

However, a Steam account is not necessary if the player only wishes to play Portal 2′s single-player, he added.

Portal 2 on PlayStation 3 is the first console title to implement Valve’s Steamworks system, which allows cross-platform play between PS3 and PC. It also lets PS3 users who register their game on Steam play the PC version. However, it isnt the first game on PS3 to mandate a separate login. MGS 4 also used a similar system in which players had to register a seprate Konami Id to play online.

Portal 2 launches on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC on April 22.
