Portal 2 PS3 Steam features announced

Valve made a promise last e3 that the PS3 version of Portal 2 will be shipping with various steam enabled features, which’ll be a debut of Steam’s functioning on a next-gen console for the first time.

Today we get to know about what exactly those feature are going to be.

The PS3 version of Portal 2 will come with cross platform play (Mac/PC vs PS3) for multiplayer games, a persistent cloud-based storage of PS3 saved games and cross platform chat (Mac/PC and PS3).

Also, those who purchase Portal 2 for PS3 can unlock a Steamplay enabled copy of Portal 2 (PC & Mac) for free and all they need to do is link their PSN and Steam accounts.

Here’s what Gabe had to say:

“We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product,” said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. “Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases.”

“We designed the Portal 2 PS3 experience to be very straightforward for gamers,” said Josh Weier, project lead on Portal 2 at Valve. “PS3 gamers will be able to simply drop the Blu-Ray disc in the PS3, link to their Steam account from inside the game, and all their Steam friends (on PC and Mac) will be visible and accessible for chat and game invites.”

This is far better than what we expected it to be.

Portal 2 releases on April 18 in the US and April 22 in Europe for PS3, 360 and PC.

My friend and I want to play it but he prefers PS3. He wants to get his brother the Portal 2 / Portal package from steam as well as himself, and I am wondering, if he were to buy the pre-order package (2x Portal / Portal 2) Will he be able to play these games on PS3? I have only heard that you can buy on PS3 and play on PC/Mac, does it work the other way around?

So will it be plagued by server disconnections just like playing Valve games on Xbox 360?

@Alex: It’s been delayed enough that I think this should be the real deal.

Sounds like Gabe realizes that the PS3 is a profitable platform for him now…
We might even see a release of L4D(2) on the PS3 in the future…
