Square Enix unviels their Next Generation engine, Luminous
We heard of a rumor in May that Square Enix is developing a Next Gen engine, now it has come to fruition. Square Enix’s Yoshihisa Hashimoto revealed it at the CESA developers conference in ( CEDEC ) in Yokohoma today.
The new engine is known as Luminous and seems to be a multiplatform engine as you can see in this Pic. It also has cloud strife, Next Gen FF7 confirmed? or maybe its easier to make HD towns with this engine, you never know.
Aim of the Engine as per Hashimoto ” Is to take the world head on” and it features all of Eidos’s existing technology. Eidos eh, doesn’t sound that impressive after Kane and Lynch 2 which looked like a 5 year old game if you removed the Full screen effects.
The main features of the engine as shown were,
- Visual editing
- Live editing
- Concurrent editing
- Automatic build and Automatic test
- Asset management functionality
- Advanced rendering
- online friendly
- Task management
- Simple
- Cross platform
- General purpose
- Modularity
- Scalability
Work hasn’t begun with the new engine according to Hashimoto and we will see results in two years time as per him. Not bad but Square Enix is way too slow when it comes to producing big budget AAA games so take that news with a pinch of salt.
