SSX’s Wingsuit, inventory system’s equipment detailed

With the Wingsuit announced for SSX, creative director Todd Batty has explained what the inclusion of the feature is all about, as well as detailed the equipment stored in an inventory system.

Speaking to XG247, Batty firstly explained the game’s Wingsuit addition (footage of it in action can be seen below):

The wingsuit isn’t for doing tricks. It’s basically so you can access new areas to do cool tricks in. Basically, you jump in the air, pop your wingsuit and sail depending on your speed, velocity and whatever you can use it to access new places, cross huge gaps, in races it’s cool as it adds this new element of there’s the fastest line if you’re on a board and the fastest line if you have a Wingsuit equipped as they become very different. Some global events let you use a Wingsuit and some don’t. The Wingsuit is an amazing new addition to SSX.

When asked whether additions can be equipped to a player, Batty detailed:

Yeah, one of the things we wanted to do was create basically an RPG-like inventory system so we have thousands of items of gear, boards, boosts, everything you could equip to your player. It makes a huge element of strategy as you go into a race you obviously want to get a speed board, different boards and pieces of gear give you perks. It’s actually a really deep system for those who’re into that sort of thing but you can also just hit an optimise button and it’ll do it all for you.

Whilst a percentage of players may fear that the new additions such as Wingsuit will put the game towards an unsuitable direction, it’s certainly an intriguing inclusion which may very well add welcomed depth to the title. The inventory system, too, may shape up to be a neat addition.

SSX, a reboot of the franchise, releases on Valentine’s day in the United States, February 14th 2012, and the 17th in Europe.
