class="aligncenter" style="border: 2px solid black;" src="http://i442.photobucket.com/albums/qq142/GameWorldgr/2011/Resistance3003.jpg" alt="" width="630" height="350" />

Joseph Capelli is not a super human. He’s dishonoured but resilient. He’s got a purpose which seems hopeless the closer he gets to it. He can save the world but that is not his motivation. He is a family man. He does everything for his son, and his wife – the foster sister of Nathan Hale – the man Joseph killed. Maybe it’s the latent guilt which pushes him across the bleak and cold world of Resistance 3. This is a dark world, not the dark, one would associate with teenage angst, but melancholic and wistful. It appears dead but quietly mourns the past. The America of 1950s is overrun by Chimera. The world population is down by 90% and the rest hope for a miracle or a hero.

The First Person Shooter genre has become a drab. Every other game which is part of every other series, is lined up like an army of jester in a court. A joke here, a wisecrack there, a sardonic remark and then move on. Time for the next one. The first two games, of Insomniac’s Resistance series, have tried to be special. The fans are split over the two games. While Resistance: Fall of Man’s single-player campaign is considered, by the fans, as nothing short of greatness; Resistance 2’s multiplayer, and I personally admit this, has proved to be fantastic. What remains below the surface is, still, a launch title and its under-realised sequel.

Technically, Resistance 3 is not the same game as 2. There have been changes done to some mechanics. The weapon wheel is back and so is the health bar. Weapons upgrade themselves the more you use them against enemies, a mechanic similar to the Ratchet and Clank series. But more importantly, Insomniac have realised the importance of pacing in a game. This is a road game. As Joseph Capelli, you will make your way from an outpost in Oklahoma to New York – where the game’s finale take place. You’ll travel by foot, boat, train, air – through frozen lakes, corn fields, mines, abandoned cities – kill Chimera, break prisons and and meet a lot of survivors out there. It’s a pretty simple ‘reach from point A to B’ mechanic but the set-pieces make sure you never are really bored with the game.

The pacing is wonderfully realised and often breaks the action when required. For instance, after a heavy firefight, there are moments of relaxation when you are required to traverse through a friendly territory which could be followed by surviving your way through a forest while avoiding invisible snipers in a stealth sequence. Resistance 3 is a love child of Half Life 2 in that regard. In fact the similarity does not end there; a level in the game is a good reminder of the brilliant ‘We Don’t Go To Ravenholm…’ chapter from the Valve game. The set pieces are good enough to actually rival some other games – if they are played or executed the way they are meant to be. There are times when the immersion is broken because simple things are overlooked by the developers.

This one time, in a scripted sequence, I was supposed to carry an object to a point amidst a battle with Chimera hot on their heels, attacking from everywhere. Because I had the said object in my hand, I was unable to hold a weapon. The enemy, in this sequence, are meant to not attack you. So they fire everywhere except where you are. It’s a good, involving segment but was broken when I stopped running. The enemy stood in front of me, firing wildly without a single bullet even caressing me. The immersion was broken but Insomniac managed to pull it all together with the next segment in the game.

Earlier when I mentioned Resistance 3 being a love child of Half Life 2, it was not meant to be derogatory. This is no tribute band, it has a solid foundation. One area where Insomniac Games truly shine is their weapon design and balance. The game introduces two new weapons and a grenade type while retaining the best from the previous games. The health system is also no longer regenerative – there is a health bar, you must grab health packs occasionally. The two mechanics – varied weapons and non-regenerative health system – works pretty well in conjunction with each other. Capelli is an ordinary human, he can die just like the rest. The system makes you realise that and makes the expendable health packs invaluable. The weapons let you approach a group of enemies in a variety of ways. Some of them even retain their usefulness sans the ammo. The Auger Mark II lets you spot enemies through walls with its thermal sensing scope. It helps you plan an approach, which can be really useful in higher difficulties.

These weapons upgrade themselves and unlock new abilities and attributes. The upgrade system works similar to the Ratchet and Clank series. Use a weapon enough number of times on enemies and it will upgrade itself. It’s a great way of complementing your choice of weapon. The upgrades themselves are well thought off but can make the game easier to deal with at times. Resistance 3 is not a very difficult game. In fact not before the last segment of the game, in a frozen New York city, I had much trouble dealing with many enemies on the hard difficulty. The enemies themselves are not too bright but there are improvements from the previous games. Some of them can also get unbearable in numbers, especially the melee ones – but there is nothing better than the swing of a sledgehammer or a shotgun blast to take them out. They also spill a lot of blood making each kill is much satisfactory.

Different Chimera make the battles interesting but the same cannot be said about bosses. Insomniac have, once again, given much importance to the scale. From Goliaths to a dead Kracken, they have managed to put it in your face. This is what humans are messing up against. The bosses, which you get to fight in the game, themselves are pretty big but very tedious. These are from the species – shiny-glowing-weak-areas – shoot them in the glowing parts and they will eventually fall. It’s fun to see a giant beast fall down with all its might taking down a few buildings with it but killing it is a pretty standard affair.

The multiplayer has its moments. The competitive modes, deathmatch and objective-based modes, are standard fare which pack a lot of fun across the different maps from the areas in the game and maps not present in the single-player campaign. The 8 player co-op, from Resistance 2, is dropped here for reasons only Insomniac can answer because that was probably the most fun part about the game. There is however, a drop-in drop-out 2 player co-op, which can be played online as well as offline. Overall, Resistance 3’s multiplayer is solid and well balanced with some really amazing maps.

This is a good game. It is the best of the series and certainly more fun and engaging than any other PS3 exclusive shooter that I have played. Few flaws prevent it from ascending to greatness. Some of which are pretty elementary ones while some not yet realised. I’ve always felt that the series tells story from the point of view of Humans and has not clearly explored the other side of things. And this is my primary complaint for Resistance 3. There has clearly been an improvement over the main storyline, the primary characters and for most of the game you, as a player, do feel connected to them but everything else is through radio broadcasts, scattered written and audio journals. The last segment of the game, which takes place in the Chimera ship, one of their stronghold, looks very derivative. While the architecture here has certain unique visual traits, the purpose is clearly not defined or missing. If Resistance was a single game, telling the story from the point of view of humans, would have been interesting. It is a trilogy now and by this time there are expectations about the other species which are calling Earth their home.
<p
