Top 5 Upcoming PlayStation 3 Exclusives That Justifies a Purchase

2011 has, so far, been a memorable year for Sony’s PlayStation 3. The console has a massive line-up of exclusives; so much so, that over 20 exclusives – with most of them being released – have or are readying up for a launch on the console. There’s still several games for the platform which are yet to see a release, so here’s the top five upcoming PlayStation 3 exclusives that justifies and warrants a purchase.
#5 – Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One:
The Ratchet & Clank series has arguably been a flagship franchise for Sony since last generation. The Insomniac Games-created franchise’s genre is aimed towards ages less than the average gamer. However, that’s an unfortunate bias as each installment in the colorful IP has entertained millions of gamers of all ages and it’s one of the few single-player online games which delivers a hugely entertaining gameplay paired with stellar, memorable characters. The latest iteration in Ratchet & Clank comes in the form of All 4 One. As the name suggests, the series, for the first time, brings a four-player cooperative experience – both offline and online (with the online aspect delivering a drop-in and drop-out feature). The game takes place after its predecessor, A Crack in Time, but it’s not a direct sequel. We can’t wait for All 4 One to launch next month to give us more action from the PlayStation mascots.
- Developer: Insomniac Games.
- Release dates: October 18 (North America) – October 21 (Europe).

# 4 – Starhawk:
Incognito Entertainment released Warhawk a year after the PlayStation 3′s launch and the multiplayer-only game went onto become one of the most beloved titles in the platform’s extensive line-up. Warhawk gave gamers countless hours of fun, and I indeed was part of that group who took advantage of the game. Originally released as a PlayStation Network exclusive, the multiplayer third-person shooter still attracts thousands of players on a daily basis. Due to the game’s success and growth, a sequel was imminent and it all started with ‘Starhawk’ being trademarked by publisher Sony and developer LightBox Interactive – who consisted of most employees from the now defunct Incognito Entertainment. Indeed, Starhawk was inevitably announced and this time around it would be taking the fights to space. The spiritual successor to Warhawk will also include a new feature for the series, a single-player story mode. The online multiplayer mode of Starhawk, meanwhile, will sport a new RTS-based system called “Build n’ Battle” giving players the opportunity to build structures (bunkers, defenses, armories, etc) during battles.
- Developer: LightBox Interactive.
- Release dates – Unofficial: February 1 (North America) – February 4 (Europe).

#3 – Twisted Metal:
The longest running PlayStation franchise continues with the next iteration of Twisted Metal. The gritty, action-packed, somewhat dark series brings its mayhem onto the PlayStation 3 in early 2012. There’s not many games available in the market that currently or will strike similarities to the Eat, Sleep, Play game and that’s why it’s one of the most eagerly anticipated exclusives for Sony’s platform – the game features countless vehicles and a vast options of attachable weapons. Multiplayer combat is where the emphasis has been put on for Twisted Metal; 4 player split-screen and 16-players online modes are included. A new inclusion for the series is the introduction of Nuke Mode – an online game mode where players choose a faction, where both factions will have a metal statue that is held via a helicopter – the objective is to destroy it before the opposing team does.
- Developer: Eat, Sleep, Play.
- Release dates – February 14 (North America).

#2 – Final Fantasy Versus XIII:
Ah, the game that was never meant to release. On a serious note, however, the frustration from fans stemming from Final Fantasy Versus XIII had recently seemed to reach boiling point as developer Square Enix failed to provide any updates on the PlayStation 3 exclusive. That was the case until the game was confirmed to be in 100% development stages a few months ago and a more recent update of the game’s more specific details (such as its engine being Square’s next-gen Luminous) being outed. This generation’s Final Fantasy title was deemed a failure upon fans in regards to the RPG’s overall gameplay action, and Square’s case was seemingly worsened when a sequel to the game was announced. However, the only hope for the long-running franchise to return to its former glory is if Final Fantasy Versus XIII lives up to its expectations.
- Developer: Square Enix
- Release dates – TBD.

#1 – The Last Guardian:

When it comes to unique concepts and bringing something new to the table, you can’t get more authentic than Team Ico’s The Last Guardian. I truly believe this can be one of the biggest PlayStation 3 exclusives for Sony, and pray for them to market the game as much as possible, not only for potential sales, but to showcase the game to the mass-market and hopefully get gamers to experience this in-the-making gem. The Last Guardian’s predecessors, ICO and Shadow of the Collosus, were not by any means commercial blockbusters but Sony have kept faithful and loyal to the IP mainly due to the fact that both of the PlayStation 2 games were highly praised because of its smart design elements and the gameplay being extremely unique, resulting in a truly memorable experience. Indeed, the same should apply to The Last Guardian which got gamers attention with its moving E3 reveal demo; the game follows a boy - who embarks on an adventure with a huge creature – named Trico - striking similarities to a griffin.
- Developer: Team Ico.
- Release dates – TBD.
