What the Trophy Hack means for Sony and Gamers?
The PS3 was hacked recently which left it wide open. People can now sign any code they want and the PS3 will think its official. Now many people think they bought the PS3 so they can do whatever they want with it. I humbly disagree with this line of thinking. Why? Because it will do more harm than good. Why do you need to open up a closed system and make it run stuff on it that the manufacturer never intended to run in the first place?
The PS3 Trophy unlocker is a new homebrew app resulting out of this hack that the elitist homebrew lovers have created. Yeah, you can unlock trophies now and get that platinum trophy without even earning a single one in reality. Not only does this ruin the leaderboards but takes away the satisfaction of getting legit trophies or accomplishing something great. I spent a lot of time getting the 10k kills in Resistance 2 and now a loser can easily hack and get that platinum trophy without even breaking a sweat. I know most of you don’t care about Trophies or Achievements but many do and it’s really unfair on them.
Here’s Jim (name changed) who recently tried out this hack and posted this on a hacking forums:
“Just tried it with BUZZ Quiz TV (EU) original disc – Played a round of the game then quit, trophy’s now show as 100% I have 70% previously.â€
The current app can change time stamps as well, so it will be incredibly hard for Sony to detect the miscreants, when someone does this.
Let’s take a look at the implications that Sony faces as a result of this and how they can go about doing damage-control:
1) How will it affect Sony?
The Playstation rewards program acknowledges people who work hard on getting the trophies, with this hack Sony has to scrap it because there is no point in doing it anymore. People running with 50 platinums makes the trophy system obsolete, which means people won’t take it seriously and may result in less games sold as if the piracy resulting from this won’t do it already.
The genuine users a.k.a the good guys, will feel really cheated and they won’t be bothering about earning trophies at all because the thought of someone hacking their way to glory will really discourage any effort from their end.
Some PS3 exclusives offer more Gold, Silver trophies than multi-plats and it’s seen as an added attraction by many while some games have so called “easy” platinums which is also considered to be a selling point of the game. Needless to say, if anyone can hack their way to achieving or earning all that, noone will be bothered about how many or what qualtiy trophy a game carries with it and that will in turn affect sales of the games.
